Artist: Knut
Title: Bastardiser
Label: Hydrahead Records
Area: National
Rating: RRR
At first glance, the artwork and packaging of Knut's (pronounced "noot") disc can be slightly misleading because it really doesn't give you a sense of what they may sound like. I threw disc in, pumped the volume a hair, and through the speakers came the chunkiest, most gutter-bred, modern day metal I've heard in a while -- from Switzerland of all places. With a slick production, Knut's music is a chunky-soup blend of hardcore-meets-aggro metal and takes no prisoners. Knut's keen sense of timing, and fine-tuned dissonant brutality sets them apart from the current trends in heavy music.
Formed in 1994, Knut not only are serious about their music, but they are dedicated o making sure they get their music heard. After quickly establishing a following in 1997 they released their first full-length effort Leftovers, on their own indie label Snuff Records. As well to further support themselves and the local scene of their hometown of Geneva, the group started Evil their own music 'zine. D.I.Y. is the attitude found in Knut's work ethic, but most notably it's in the music. Bastardiser constantly sandblasts, crushes, bludgeons and desecrates, leaving the listener exhausted and useless. But, the good part is that after the experience, you'll find yourself hitting play ready for more metal abuse.
