Hydra Head Records

Hydra Head Records made a mark for themselves in the underground music world by consistently putting out the best hardcore-influenced metal in the world (not to mention driving collectors crazy with multiple colours of vinyl and other special limited editions of almost every release). However, over the past year or so the label's focus has gradually shifted. The Hydra Head sound of old was marked by the almost unthinkably heavy staccato rhythms, metallic lead guitar, and deep, growling vocals that characterized reputation-making bands like Converge and Cave In, but now that both of the stars of Hydra Head's fleet have sailed the label has started to cultivate a new style.

The casual listener may not detect this change, but it's definitely there. The metallic leads and fills still pepper the music and the vocalists still sound vaguely like the Cookie Monster, but the awkward ritalin-rhythms of the label's past has been replaced with an almost laid-back (but only in comparison) Sabbath-y groove. In fact, this is quite similar to what the kids these days are calling "stoner rock".
